Working at the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana has opened my eyes to the state of reproductive justice in this country. Our first day at PPAG, we went to an outreach event at a girls’ school for a program on menstrual hygiene. At the school, representatives explained how to use pads, how to keep one’s body healthy during menstruation, and most importantly, how to destigmatize menstruation among young people in Ghana. The nurse from PPAG told us that most girls in Ghana are taught about menstruation from their parents and other family members, rather than schools or health professionals, which allows for misconceptions and unfounded beliefs to be passed down through generations. Menstruation is often seen as something embarrassing and frightening, a stigma that often prevents young girls from seeking out information about the process.

A lecturess made the girls repeat, “I am a girl, and I am special.” She assured them that now that they were informed about menstruation, they would no longer be laughed at or teased by other students when they were on their cycle. Though the program was successful in informing the girls about menstruation and provided them with sanitation pads, the nurse from PPAG sadly remarked to me that most of the girls would not be able to afford sanitation pads in the future, and would therefore be unable to put what they had learned to practice. This experience reminded me of the quote, “Give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime.” However, even if the man knows how to fish, he still needs a fishing rod. A combination of information and resources is necessary in order to create a healthy education system, particularly around reproductive health.
